An Interview With CHALIE BOY

Through internet promo, email blasts, out-the-trunk combat, and mixtape placement, Chalie Boy has become one of the most requested indie artists in Texas. He’s an underground favorite as far as remixes go, and his rapping/singing style of delivery has made him one to watch for in the near future.

MS. Rivercity: What have you been working on lately?

Chalie Boy: I’ve been working on a lot of underground mixtapes as well as my solo album which is called Makin My Way 2. I have the Texas Relays 2K9 mixtape for sale now.

MS. Rivercity: You’re doing really well on the mixtape circuit. Who would you say has been the DJ that’s given you the biggest push?

Chalie Boy: If you’re talking about big names, I really don’t know ‘cause I set up an email blast and a lot of people send in requests to be added to the list. I don’t even really get to meet people like that. Right now, outside of my DJ, DJ Bull, I’d say Rapid Ric out of Austin.

MS. Rivercity: What city are you from?

Chalie Boy: I’m from Hearne and Calvert, Texas. I’m pretty much dead center in the middle of everything. I’m about 3 hours from Dallas/Fort Worth. I’m an hour and a half from Houston and the same from Austin.

MS. Rivercity: I’m sure you’re getting some major label offers with the buzz you have. Why haven’t you signed with anyone yet?

Chalie Boy: Offers are offers and if you don’t see anything you like then it’s just an offer. That’s the whole thing about doing this music – you’re working hard to get people to hear you and when you have that opportunity to do it real big you want the best opportunity that you can get. So as long as I’m doing well where I am, I’m gonna keep pushing and I’m not gonna stop until I get it.

MS. Rivercity: What would be the best opportunity for you in your eyes?

Chalie Boy: I’m not gonna say I’m dumb to the business, but I don’t really know right now. I just know that the things I see and the paperwork that I talk to my lawyer about just don’t seem right to me. In my position, those things would be good for me but overall I want to be in a position where I can take care of the rest of my people. That’s what I have my mind set on. I want to be prepared once I get on. I’m really about pushing with the people that you’re with.

MS. Rivercity: Some people might not know you started off in a group. Explain the history behind that.

Chalie Boy: The label Dirty Third Records has been established since 1998. It was started by DJ Bull. I came along in 2000 and joined a group under the label called The Freestyle Kingz. I did a couple of underground mixtapes. They liked my sound and I did a few more. After that, they asked me to join the group. With things moving slow in the beginning, some people wanted to move and progress a lot faster. After listening to other folks give their opinions, you choose to form your own opinion and decide to go your separate ways. The majority of them aren’t here anymore but I wish them all the best.

MS. Rivercity: How long were you putting out music before you started eating off of it?

Chalie Boy: I’d say it started around 2002 after we dropped our group album called Freestyle Kingz Off Da Chain. A little bit after that, things started getting a lot better. We learned a little more and met more people by traveling state to state, selling our CDs out the trunk and in the stores. We just steady worked on our craft and started focusing on stuff to get things done.

MS. Rivercity: You guys are real big on cars in Texas. Do you have some favorites you want to talk about?

Chalie Boy: I like all types of vehicles. I’m not real big on flashy cars like Porsches and things like that. I like old classic cars a majority of the time because they just look good. The new plastic cars are ok, but the old box and round shell bodies that are customized and have new leather look better. It puts you in a nice state of mind.

MS. Rivercity: Do you prefer a certain color?

Chalie Boy: Anything but pink. Pink is just not for me.

MS. Rivercity: I’d hope not. Back to your music, who produces a majority of your records?

Chalie Boy: As far as the original beats, young producers reach out to me and I take their tracks. Anybody that wants to work with me I’ll work with ‘em. I’m not stuck up. I’m not on a high horse or whatever. I’m all about opportunities. I got an opportunity in 2000 and once I got on, whoever’s hungry I don’t mind helping you out. Let’s do it.

MS. Rivercity: Is there anything else you’d like to mention?

Chalie Boy: My name is Chalie Boy, not Charlie. C-H-A-L-I-E. You can always contact me at Myspace.com/ChalieBoy. I’m a down to earth dude and I like to work. I like to get music done and be in the place. If you want to do some networking or get some work done, contact my manager Brian at 512-731-5842. I represent Dirty Third Records and the whole state of Texas. Thank you for your time. What’s up mama and the rest of my family. Stay tuned.
